Welcome to UR- Sweden Program

UR-Sweden Programme for Research and Institutional Advancement In June 2014, the National University of Rwanda (NUR) entered in a one-year agreement with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) represented by the Swedish Embassy in Kigali. The agreement covers the first year of the five year NUR-Sweden Program for Research and Institutional Development (the Program). The support focuses on the continuous development of research capacity in Rwanda and the general university institutional development. The Program marks the third phase of the research cooperation between NUR and Sweden, which started in 2002.

Current program agreement

The five year Program aims at increasing the production and use of scientific knowledge of international quality that contributes to Rwanda's development. This overall objective will be implemented through five specific objectives:

  • To establish an environment more conducive to research and postgraduate training at the University of Rwanda,
  • To increase the number of PhD and Masters holders in Rwanda, through the Programme,
  • To increase the quantity and quality of research conducted at the University of Rwanda, through the Programme,
  • To increase the use of research and competences produced within the Programme, in political decision and policy making in Rwanda, and
  • To increase the use of research and competences produced within the Programme, by the Rwandan society at large.

The current sub-programs:

Agriculture, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, E-Governance, Economics and Management, Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Law, Medical and Health Sciences, Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, ICT Infrastructure, Innovation and Use of Research, Instructional Technology, Library Infrastructure, ICT infrastructure, and the Central Research Fund. In addition there is support to continuing students from previous sub-program that were not successful in the open call that lead to the Program (environment, ICT research and), as well as Research Management (that includes Overall Programme Management, Research Directorate, MIS and Central Institutional Advancement).
